Discover "Villeneuve" manuscript thanks to Christophe Coin and Pierre Hantaï.

What is "Villeneuve" manuscript ? 350 pages of the most beautiful viola da gamba pieces by Marin Marais, including many playing directions and extra ornementations, never published before.

After acquiring and donating the manuscript to the French National Library, the Viola da Gamba Society of France has published it as a facsimile, so that as many people as possible have access to it.

To support this project, the Académie musicale de Villecroze has welcomed Christophe Coin, violist, and Pierre Hantaï, harpsichordist, for an artistic residency from October 31st to november 3rd, 2021.

In front of Julien Hanck's camera, they explore and present "Villeneuve" manuscript : its history, its original playing directions and its interpretations. The video has three parts :

  • The manuscript's history (0'28'' - 13'40'') : as explained by Christophe Coin and Pierre-François Goy, curator of the French National Library.
  • The manuscript's directions (13'40'' - 22'38'') : as explained and demonstrated by Christophe Coin.
  • Music (from 22'38'') : introducing and performing a selection of pieces, by Christophe Coin and Pierre Hantaï.
