Silvia Careddu's remarkable career began with a resounding victory at the 56th Geneva International Music Competition, where she unanimously won first prize and the audience prize.
This prestigious victory earned her an invitation from Lorin Maazel to become principal flutist of his new orchestra, the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini. Silvia then held the same prestigious position with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Wiener Symphoniker, and the Wiener Philharmoniker – Wiener Staatsoper. Since 2021, she has been principal flutist with the Orchestre National de France in Paris.
Silvia has also been guest principal flutist with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. In 2012, she became an artistic partner of the Kammerakademie Potsdam, which won the Opus Award for Best German Orchestra in 2015 and 2022. Silvia is a founding member of the Alban Berg Ensemble Wien, a versatile chamber music group that has recorded for the Deutsche Grammophon and Decca labels.
A regular soloist and chamber musician at major festivals, Silvia has performed at Schleswig Holstein, the Salzburg Festival, the Austrian Flute Festival, Quingdao in China (International Flute Festival), Cartagena, Les Arcs Festival, Bürgenstock Festival, Australian National Academy of Music, Pollenca Festival, Salon Festival, Musiktage Mondsee, Berlioz Festival, Riva del Garda, Hitzacker Festival, Flautissimo, the Colmar Festival, the Styriarte, and the Patmos Chamber Music Festival, as well as countless other important festivals and events.
Silvia is a professor at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). She also teaches in London at the Royal Academy of Music as a guest professor and at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole. From 2011 to 2021, she taught at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” and the Barenboim-Said Akademie in Berlin, and also taught at the École Normale de Musique A. Cortot in Paris. She regularly gives masterclasses in Asia, Europe, and the United States.
A respected figure in the music world, Silvia serves on the juries of prestigious international competitions, including the Geneva Music Competition, the A. Nicolet Competition, the Premio Abbado, the M. Larrieu Competition, the Crusell International Competition, and the Prague Spring International Competition.
Born in Cagliari, Italy, Silvia studied at the Conservatoire de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where she graduated with honors. Her artistry was shaped by the teachings of A. Nicolet, R. Ghiani, R. Guiot, F. Souchard, and Emmanuel Pahud.
