After excelling at his studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris where he was awarded first prizes in piano and chamber music (taught by Yvonne Loriod, Jean Hubeau, Ventsislav Yankoff and Christian Ivaldi) at the tender age of 18, Laurent Cabasso honed his skills under the watchful eye of teacher Maria Curcio-Diamand (a former student of Arthur Schnabel). Winning several international competitions (the Géza Anda Prize in Zurich in 1982, Tokyo in 1983, finalist at the Clara Haskil competition in Vevey in 1987) marked the beginning of a prestigious international music career.

He has performed in many recitals and concerts in Paris (Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Salle Pleyel), Zurich (Tonhalle), Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), Geneva (Victoria Hall), Salzburg (Festspielhaus) and beyond, as well as at festivals such as La Roque d’Anthéron, Piano aux Jacobins, in Besançon, Montpellier and in the States and Asia. He has been invited as a guest of orchestras such as the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonique de Radio France, the Tonhalle in Zurich, the Capitole in Toulouse, the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Lyon and Lille national orchestras and the Orchestre National de France, led by conductors such as Charles Dutoit, Ferdinand Leitner, Armin Jordan, Tibor Varga, Serge Baudo, Emmanuel Krivine, Michel Plasson, Jean-Claude Casadesus and Ronald Zollman…

This ardent aficionado of chamber music is a highly respected and sought-after partner and regularly performs alongside some of the world's top musicians: Sonia Wieder-Atherton, Alexandre Tharaud, Gérard Poulet, Raphaël Oleg, Vadim Repin, Gérard Caussé, Pierre Amoyal, les Quatuors Rosamonde, Sine Nomine, Arpeggione et Enesco, Laurent Korcia, Marie-Josèphe Jude, Philippe Bernold, Ariane Granjon, Pascal Moraguès, Mireille Delunsch, Gaëtane Prouvost and Sylvia Marcovici, to name but a few.

In 2010, the Chopin Festival in Paris appointed Laurent Cabasso as one of the ten 'patron' pianists of the Chopin opus that was performed to mark the composer's bicentenary celebrations in 2010 during the 'Bon anniversaire, Monsieur Chopin' events in Châteauroux and Paris. His discography is an accurate illustration of his approach to music and is always well-received – Schumann: Choc du Monde de la musique, ffff de Télérama; Prokofiev: Grand Prix du Disque prize awarded by the Académie du Disque Français; Shostakovich/ Prokofiev with Sonia Wieder-Atherton: Joker from Crescendo; Beethoven: chosen by Le Monde as one of their Records of the Year; the Diapason d’Or for his recording of Liszt alongside the organist Olivier Vernet; Choc du Monde de la Musique and the Diapason d’Or of the year for his contribution to the Carnaval des Animaux in Saint-Saëns. The 'L’œuvre Pour Violon et Piano' album by Gabriel Pierné with Gaétane Prouvost was released by Intégral Classic in 2006, followed by Louise Farrenc's in 2008, featuring the same musicians. Laurent Cabasso has been teaching at the CRR in Strasbourg since 1993 and is an assistant professor at the CNSM in Paris. He joined the CNSMD Lyon's teaching body in September 2016.

He teaches at the Académie musicale de Villecroze in 1999.
