Pianist Joseph Kalichstein, born in Tel Aviv in 1946, came to the United States in 1962. He studied piano with Joshua Shor in Israel and Edward Steuermann and Ilona Kabos at the Juilliard School in New York. In 1967, two years prior to gaining a master's degree at Juilliard, he made his New York recital debut and won the Young Concert Artists' Award. In 1968 he appeared on national television in his first guest appearance with the New York Philharmonic, under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. He then took first prize--unanimously awarded by a jury that included George Szell, Rudolf Serkin, and William Steinberg--in the 1969 Leventritt Competition. In 1970 he made his debut with the London Symphony under André Previn.
Kalichstein has worked with many artists over the course of his career. Among them are violinist Jaime Laredo and cellist Sharon Robinson, with whom Kalichstein performed regularly for approximately five years before the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio was officially formed in 1981. He continues to perform in music capitals the world over as recitalist, soloist with orchestra, and chamber musician. The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio continues to perform on its own but is sometimes joined by other players, either individuals or ensembles like the Guarneri or Emerson String Quartet.
Mr. Kalichstein has collaborated with such celebrated conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, Christoph von Dohnányi, Zubin Mehta, André Previn, George Szell, and Erich Leinsdorf. His orchestral engagements have included performances with the Boston, Chicago, London, and Vienna Symphony Orchestras; the Berlin, London, and New York Philharmonics; the Cleveland Orchestra; and the English, Scottish, Franz Liszt, and St. Paul Chamber Orchestras. He has been enthusiastically received at the Helsinki, Edinburgh, Aspen, Prague, Ravinia, Tanglewood, Salzburg, and Verbier Festivals.
In 1997, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts appointed Kalichstein Artistic Advisor for Chamber Music and Artistic Director of the Fortas Chamber Music Concerts. Under his tutelage the Kennedy Center has produced chamber music festivals with specific themes, such as the music of Brahms and Beethoven, or the history of the piano. Kalichstein has been a frequent chamber music coach, and, since 1983, a member of the faculty of the Juilliard School. In 2003 he was appointed to Juilliard's newly established Edwin S. and Nancy A. Marks Chair in Chamber Music Studies. Kalichstein's recordings, reflecting the broad scope of his concert repertoire, include standard works of the nineteenth century as well as less familiar compositions of recent vintage, such as Piano Concerto (1986), by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.
He teaches at the Académie musicale de Villecroze in 2010.
