Johannes Meissl was born in Ried (Upper-Austria). He studied at the A. Bruckner-Conservatory Linz (violin and composition)  and at the Academy of Music in Vienna with W. Schneiderhan and G. Hetzel (violin) and Hatto Beyerle (chamber music). He graduated with distinction and special award of the ministry of science. 

Member of the Artis Quartet Vienna since 1982, they studied one year with the LaSalle Quartet in the USA. He played with ist ensemble regular concerts in the world’s most important music centres and music festivals. They won numerous prizes  for more than 30 recordings and play regularly in the Musikverein in Vienna. 

Beside the quartet work Johannes Meissl also appears in recitals and as a soloist and regularly takes part in various chamber music projects.
Since 1992, he teaches at the University of Music in Vienna. He is now professor for strings chamber music and director of the J. Haydn Institute of Chamber Music. Johannes Meissl is artistic director of the university’s International Summer Academy (isa) and - together with H. Beyerle - artistic director of ECMA (European Chamber Music Academy).
Mr. Meissl also teaches at numerous renowned summer academies and Masterclasses at Conservatoire National Superieur Paris, Guildhall School of Music and Drama London, CCM Cincinnati USA, Malmö Universty of Music, Geidai Tokyo, to name a few.

Having coached the violin sections of various Austrian youth orchestras for many years he has recently successfully taking up conducting (f.e. Geidai Chamber Orchestra Tokyo, Academic Symphony Sofia and Jeunesse Orchestra Vienna).

He teaches at the Académie musicale de Villecroze in 2015.
