Hatto Beyerle was born in 1933 in Frankfurt am Main. He studied violin, viola, chamber music and conducting in Freiburg/Breisgau and Vienna. He has instigated and founded „Alban Berg Quartet“ and other chamber music groups. From 1964-1987 he was Professor for Viola and Chamber Music at the Vienna University for Music and the Performing Arts and since 1987 he has performed the same function at the University for Music and Drama in Hanover and from 1990-2004 at the University for Music in the town of Basel. Since 1998 he has been at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole (Florence). He is Artistic Director of the European Chamber Music Academy (ECMA).

He teaches at the Académie musicale de Villecroze in 2011.
