Roland Pidoux studied at the Paris Conservatoire and received his diploma in 1965 and in 1969. Under the influences of his professors Jean Hubeau and Joseph Calvet, he has developed a passion for chamber music in addition to his career of concertist. In 1998, he founded the Ensemble Instrumental de France, later renamed Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, with Jean-Pierre Wallez. He then played with the Quatuor Via Nova for seven years and then, formed the Trio Pasquier with Régis and Bruno Pasquier.
In 1969, he was hired by the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Paris, and from 1978 to 1987, he was cellist solo at the Orchestre National de France. Thanks to his love for chamber music, during this period, he had the occasion to perform with exceptional musicians such as Pierre Fournier, Mstislav Rostropovitch, Isaac Stern and Jean-Pierre Rampal among others. He returned to his long-time friend pianist Jean-Claude Pennetier to play in a trio with one of his favorite stage partners, violinist Régis Pasquier. This trio became popular in France and abroad, more specifically in the USA, where they are regularly invited.
He followed the steps of André Navarra, since Roland Pidoux now owns his master’s Gagliano cello and is also teaching at the Paris Conservatoire, since 1988. He is the artistic director and program director of the Rencontre de Violoncelle de Bélaye and a founding member of the cello octet: Les Violoncelles Français.
He recorded numerous discs of chamber music, for example, the Beethoven’s complete sonatas for cello and piano with Jean-Claude Pennetier, awarded with a « Choc Classica », or more recently Rachmaninov’s two trios.
He teaches at the Académie musicale de Villecroze in 1987 and 1988.
